in the Loreto National Marine Park Expedition Challenge
Loreto to La Paz The 6-day Expedition Challenge in the Loreto National Marine Park may be taken as a trip, or as training, or as a dynamic water and leadership assessment through the BCU. For more info on the training and assessment options, please refer to Loreto Kayak Symposium website for 4* Sea Kayak Leader course. Sample Itinerary: (subject to change due to weather) Day 0 Travel to Loreto, meet for evening briefing. Day 1 Taxi ride to launch near Puerto Escondido. Group gear division and boat packing. Launch. Paddle 7-10 miles to southeastern Carmen Island, stopping for lunch along the way on the white beaches of a marine fossil bed. Set up camp. Bask in the starlight.
Day 2 Paddle about 15 miles to Punta Perico, one of the most remote points on Carmen Island. Swell and current meet the underwater reef and can make some interesting conditions to play with. Wildlife sightings may include blue-footed boobies, dolphins, sea lions, and huge fish, if snorkeling. Day 3 Day trip from camp along the colorful and rugged east coast of Carmen Island. Skill development and play.
Day 4 Descend Carmen Island and cross to Danzante Island for a journey of 18 nautical miles or more, depending on the route. Danzante also has spectacular snorkeling, and sweet views of sunrise over the sea. In the darkness of the night, let the vastness of the starry sky inspire your imagination. Day 5 Circumnavigate Danzante Island in 8 miles, stopping for a hike if desired, and some snorkeling opportunities. There could also be a sunrise paddle to a nearby sea stack for the early risers.
Day 6 Enjoy a short paddle to the take-out and meet that evening in town for dinner together. Day After. Fly out, or choose to stay and relax a while!

The 10-day Expedition Challenge Loreto to La Paz covers terrain that is spectacular for its remoteness and beauty. Expect long paddling days and breathtaking scenery. Sample Itinerary: (subject to change due to weather) Day 0 Travel to Loreto, meet for evening briefing. Day 1 Taxi ride to launch near Puerto Escondido. Group gear division and boat packing. Launch. Shakedown paddle about 7 miles to a cozy crescent of beach on the mountainous Baja coast. Day 2 Paddle down the coast to bask in the hot springs if the tide is right. Camp near Agua Verde, a tiny, endearing ranching and fishing community. Days 3-9 Continue south along the roadless desert mountain coast, camping among some curious geological formations. Stars shine brilliant out here! Depending on weather, there may be some winded-in layover days to hike some canyons, or a chance to cross to Isla San Jose and explore the island.
Day 10 Enjoy a final paddle beside mountains striped green and tan and red. Meet the taxi, and the kayak transport (and your luggage) for a ride to a La Paz hotel. Dine together that night in town. Day After. Fly out, or choose to stay and relax a while! |
